This question has haunted me pretty much my whole life, even now at the “adult” age of 23 I still don’t have an answer. When I was younger I battled between wanting to be the next Beyonce, a lawyer, a paediatrician, a psychotherapist and that’s just naming a few. There is a profession that hasn’t crossed my mind, yet here I am after decades of education and still confused on where I fit in.

Yet, it feels like the pressure is on, my parents are looking for me to flourish into this successful professional that they have been grooming me from nursery to be. But I’m lost. Unable to make a plan because I don’t have a goal, praying that God will reveal this great profession to me. I mean careers are much more fluid now then they used to be. Everyone is talking about “starting your own business”, about “doing what you love”, about being “passionate”. But I don’t know what that is.

Now I could do an ‘average’ job, a regular 9-5. I mean at some point we all have to do things we may not want to right? I could just start in a company and stay there. It happens. But your career is a life decision. And I don’t want to be too hasty, I don’t want to look back in 10 Years miserable – I mean I resigned from my last position for a reason. I want to have job satisfaction. I want to be proud of what I do in a company where I’m appreciated. I just can’t articulate the capacity in which I’d be doing it and for what organisation, hence this feeling of confusion.

I’m writing this in the hope that someone out there is experiencing something similar and I want you to know, you are not alone! This is not the end of the story, just a chapter in the book. Just a little message for you and I, don’t settle. Keep looking for your calling, God will reveal it. And if you’ve been through it let us know how you got through, where are you now? I need the encouragement.

Stay blessed y’all,

    1. Thank you so much! And that is so weird as in person I often find people think I am younger than I am, glad to know my writing is more mature. I checked out that link and I really enjoyed it, thank you. Definitely reframed aspects of my mentality.
