The first chapter of Haggai really brought into focus the topic of priorities.  He was addressing the people regarding the building of the temple, which as it was, they had yet to build it – it was in ruins. On the other hand, they were focusing on their own wealth and health. God became displeased and punished them.

“You look for much, but you find little. When you bring it home, I destroy It. Why? Asks the lord all powerful. “Because you all work hard for your own houses while my house is still in ruins!”

Haggai 1 v 9 (NCV)

Unknowingly to the people God held back the rain so the crops couldn’t grow, he fostered a period of dissatisfaction where the people were sowing seed but there was no harvest. They were earning money but had nothing to show for it, eating but was never full, drinking and still thirsty.

How high do we prioritise God and obedience to his teachings? We – I – could unknowingly be tipping the scales against me because I am not putting him first. Have you ever looked around and wondered why all these things around you are failing? Why can’t I save, I work hard? Why am I putting in all this work and getting little/no returns?

It highlighted to me the necessity of putting God on the top of my priority list, If I am not working for him can I blame him if he’s not working for me?

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”

Matthew 6 v 33 (NKJV)

Disclaimer: I am a Christian, but I’m not a saint. However, this chapter really touched me and I would like to share my interpretation if it with you and I’m sure I will again in the future.
